Detoxification

Medically supervised detox is often the first step in treatment — helping a woman stop using drugs or alcohol as safely and comfortably as possible.

What detoxification involves

When someone has been using drugs or alcohol regularly, the body adapts to the substance. Stopping can then bring on withdrawal symptoms, which range from restlessness, poor sleep and anxiety to effects that need medical attention. How withdrawal unfolds depends on the substance, how much and how long it has been used, and the person’s physical and mental health.

Detoxification is the process of clearing the substance from the body while those symptoms are monitored and managed. Doing this under supervision means changes can be noticed early and responded to, rather than faced alone at home.

Detox at The New Inception

Detox at TNI begins with an assessment. The clinical team — which includes a Medical Director and a consultant psychiatrist — reviews the substances involved, previous attempts to stop, current medication and any other health concerns before agreeing a plan.

  • Care takes place in a private, women-only setting.
  • The plan reflects the individual, not a fixed timetable.
  • Comfort, rest and emotional support are part of the process, not an afterthought.
  • Family members can be kept informed, with the client’s consent.

TNI publishes medical and rapid detox among its services. Which approach is suitable is a clinical decision made after assessment; the team will explain the options and any risks before treatment starts.

Why some medicines are reduced gradually

Stopping certain substances abruptly — for example alcohol, sedatives such as benzodiazepines, or opioid pain medication — can be risky. In these situations clinicians may recommend reducing the dose step by step. Please don’t stop prescribed medication suddenly without medical advice.

After detox

Detox addresses physical dependence. It does not, on its own, address the reasons a person began using or the patterns that keep the cycle going. That is why detox at TNI leads into therapy — individual counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, family sessions and relapse prevention — so the work continues once the body is stable.

How long does detox take?

It varies with the substance, the amount used and the person’s health. After assessment, the team can explain what to expect in your situation.

Is detox enough on its own?

Usually not. Detox is a starting point; therapy and aftercare are what help a woman build a life without the substance.
